Our leather: full-grain crust
Full-grain leather keeps the natural outer surface of the hide, the strongest and most durable layer. Crust leather is tanned leather that has not been covered with a pigment coating or pressed with an artificial grain. That is what makes our shoes different: you see and feel the real leather, it breathes, and it takes cream and polish well, developing a richer patina as you wear it.
LWG Silver-rated tanneries
The Leather Working Group (LWG) audits tanneries on environmental performance, including water and energy use, chemical management and waste. Our leather comes from tanneries rated LWG Silver.
Inside the shoe
- Genuine lambskin or sheepskin lining: soft, breathable and moulds to your foot.
- Padded insoles for all-day comfort.
- Sizes UK 7–13 (EU 41–47), in standard (F) and wide (G) fittings.
Our handmade soles
Each sole is built by hand from several parts:
- Top welt: leather, finishing the edge where the upper meets the sole.
- Sole sheet: TPR (thermoplastic rubber), durable, flexible and anti-slip.
- Heel stack: Masonite, built up in layers.
- Heel top lift: rubber, in our signature blue.
The finished sole is then cemented to the upper.
Why cemented construction
The handmade sole is bonded to the upper with strong adhesive rather than stitched through a welt (Goodyear) or directly through the insole (Blake). Cemented shoes are lighter and flexible straight out of the box, with no long break-in. Full resoling is less common: a UK resole typically costs £60–70, so we focus on a shoe that is comfortable and good value from day one. Heel top lifts can be replaced by any cobbler.
