How to Match Your Belt and Shoes

By Oswin Hyde · Last updated 28 September 2026

The short answer: wear a belt in the same colour family as your shoes, with a similar finish. Black with black, brown with brown, tan with tan. It doesn't need to be an exact match, just close enough that the two read as a pair. The more formal the outfit, the closer the match should be.

Quick matching chart

If your shoes are… Wear a belt that is… Avoid
Black leather (Oxfords, Derbies) Black smooth leather, slim buckle Brown or tan
Black patent (black tie) Black leather with a high polish, or braces instead Matte or woven belts
Dark brown leather Dark brown leather, within a shade or two Black; very light tan
Tan or cognac Tan or mid-brown leather Black; very dark brown
Bordo, oxblood or burgundy A deep red belt, or dark brown Black; bright tan
Suede (any colour) Suede in a similar shade, or matte leather High-shine leather
Navy suede or leather Navy, or a dark brown that doesn't compete Black
Leather trainers A casual or braided leather belt A dress belt with a shiny buckle
Loafers with no socks A braided leather or suede belt Heavy wide belts

The three rules that matter

1. Match the colour family, not the exact shade

Leather ages, and two pieces dyed on different days are never identical. What matters is that your belt and shoes sit together: both dark, both mid-tone, or both light. A dark brown belt with dark brown shoes works even if one is slightly warmer. A tan belt with dark chocolate shoes doesn't, because the gap is too big to look intentional.

If you own one belt, make it the colour of the shoes you wear most. For most men that is dark brown or black. See our leather belts.

2. Match the finish

Shine goes with shine, matte goes with matte. Polished Oxfords want a smooth leather belt. Suede shoes look best with a suede belt: our Kenneth suede belt comes in navy, brown, tan and sand. A matte leather belt works too. Patent shoes are the exception: with a dinner suit, most men wear braces or a cummerbund and no belt at all.

3. Match the formality

A narrow belt of about 3 cm, with a small, plain buckle, suits suits and smart trousers. A wider belt of about 3.5–4 cm, with a chunkier buckle, suits jeans, chinos and boots. Braided and woven belts are for casual clothes, trainers, loafers and summer shoes. The Milo braided leather belt, in brown, tan and black, has no holes, so the prong goes through the weave wherever you need it.

Black and brown: can you mix them?

For smart outfits, no. A brown belt with black shoes is the most common mistake, and it looks like you got dressed in the dark. With casual clothes, a contrast can work if it looks deliberate. A tan belt with white leather trainers and jeans is fine, for example.

If you want one belt for both, a reversible belt solves it. The Jim Reversible Black Tan and Jim Reversible Black Brown turn from one colour to the other.

Colours beyond black and brown

Bordo, oxblood and navy all follow the same rule: match the family. Bordo shoes like the Cameron Bordo Oxford brogue pair with a deep red belt such as the Hunter Cherry. Dark brown is the safe alternative. For navy suede shoes, a navy suede belt is the neatest choice.

Buckle, watch and cufflinks

Once the belt matches your shoes, match the metals above the waist. A silver buckle goes with a steel watch and silver cufflinks. A gold or brass buckle goes with gold. This matters most with a suit, where everything is on show.

Weddings and groomsmen

Grooms and groomsmen don't need identical shoes, but everyone's belt should match their own shoes. If the groomsmen wear different shoe colours, agree on one family (all brown, or all black) so the photos look coordinated. See our wedding shoes.

Frequently asked questions

Do my belt and shoes have to match exactly?

No. They should be in the same colour family with a similar finish. Close is enough.

What colour belt goes with brown shoes?

A brown belt of a similar depth: dark brown with dark brown, tan with tan.

What colour belt goes with black shoes?

Black. With a suit, choose smooth black leather and a plain silver buckle.

Can I wear a brown belt with black shoes?

Not with smart clothes. With jeans and trainers, a deliberate contrast can work.

Should my belt match my trainers?

It matters less. Pick a casual leather or woven belt in a colour that sits with your trainers or your trousers.

What should I wear with suede shoes?

A suede belt in a similar shade, or a matte leather belt. Avoid polished leather.

Do I need a belt with a suit?

Only if the trousers have belt loops. Trousers with side adjusters or braces buttons are meant to be worn without one.
