Men's Tie Trends 2026: What's in Style and How to Wear It

By Oswin Hyde · Last updated 28 September 2026

The short answer: in 2026 the tie is back, and the look is mid-width (about 7–8 cm), textured and in rich, deep colours. Knitted and woven ties, small neat patterns and classic stripes lead the way. Very skinny and very wide ties have both faded. Choose a width that matches your jacket lapels, and a colour that is darker than your shirt.

2026 tie trends at a glance

What In style for 2026 Fading
Width Mid-width, 7–8 cm Skinny ties under 6 cm; extra-wide ties
Fabric Knitted, woven and matte textures; silk High-shine satin
Pattern Small neats, dots, stripes, geometrics Loud novelty prints
Colour Burgundy, forest green, navy, rust, olive, camel Bright, flat primary colours
Knot Four-in-hand or half-Windsor Oversized full Windsor on slim collars

Tie width: what to wear in 2026

Match your tie to your lapels: a slim lapel wants a slightly slimmer tie, a wider lapel a slightly wider one. For most suits that lands between 7 and 8 cm at the widest point.

Width Best for Examples
6–6.5 cm Knitted ties, slim suits, smart-casual Ash Teal, Ash Beige (6.5 cm knitted)
7–7.5 cm Everyday office and most suits Gabe Navy, Fox Green (7.5 cm)
8 cm Classic tailoring, weddings, broader builds Mallard Navy Silk Tie (8 cm silk)

Fabrics: silk, knitted or polyester?

Texture is the biggest trend for 2026. A matte or knitted tie looks more considered than a shiny one, and it suits the softer tailoring most men now wear to the office.

Silk

Silk drapes well, ties a neat knot and keeps its shape. It is the best choice for suits, weddings and interviews. Our silk ties include the Mallard Navy, Hunting Navy and Burgundy Geometric.

Knitted

Knitted ties have a square end and a nubbly texture. They are more relaxed, so wear them with blazers, chinos, flannel and tweed rather than a sharp business suit. Try the Ash Teal, or the banded Drew Navy/White and Jack Teal/Green. These are knitted polyester, 6.5 cm wide.

Woven polyester (microfibre)

Polyester ties are hard-wearing, resist creases and stains, and cost less than silk. A woven texture, like the Gabe Navy or Gabe Copper/Green, gives the matte finish that is in style. For the smartest occasions, silk still ties the neater knot.

Patterns and colours for 2026

Small, repeating patterns are the most versatile: neats, pin dots and fine geometrics. Try the Arthur Green neat or the Polka Navy pin dot. Stripes remain a safe classic, such as the Wilbur Red or the wider Archie Navy/Brown.

For colour, deep tones lead: burgundy, forest green, navy and earthy rust, olive and camel. The Harry Copper/Navy and Finn Green/Brown bring those autumn shades to a navy or grey suit.

How to wear a tie

Length

The tip should just touch the top of your belt buckle. Shorter looks dated; longer looks sloppy.

Knot

The four-in-hand is the easiest knot and suits most collars and most ties, especially knitted ones. The half-Windsor is slightly larger and more symmetrical, good for business shirts with a wider collar. Save the full Windsor for thin silk ties and wide cutaway collars. Pinch a small dimple under the knot for a finished look.

Tie clips and tie bars

A tie clip holds the tie to your shirt so it doesn't swing. Wear it between the third and fourth buttons of your shirt, and choose one that is narrower than the tie, about three-quarters of its width. Match the metal to your watch and cufflinks.

Matching tie, shirt and suit

Choose a tie darker than your shirt. Pair a patterned tie with a plain shirt, or mix patterns of different scales, such as a small-neat tie with a wide-stripe shirt. Your pocket square should complement the tie, not match it exactly. See our silk pocket squares, and for belts and shoes read how to match your belt and shoes.

Ties for weddings and black tie

For a daytime wedding, a silk tie in a colour picked from the wedding palette works well for the groom and groomsmen. A matching colour with slightly different patterns looks coordinated without looking like a uniform. For black tie, wear a black bow tie; our Black Silk Bow Tie is a self-tie in black silk. Frequently asked questions

What ties are in style in 2026?

Mid-width ties of about 7–8 cm in textured fabrics such as knit, woven or matte silk, with small neat patterns, dots or stripes, in deep colours like burgundy, forest green, navy and rust.

Are skinny ties still in style?

Very skinny ties under 6 cm have faded. A slimmer knitted tie of around 6–6.5 cm still works with slim suits and smart-casual outfits.

Are wide ties back?

Wider ties of 8 cm suit classic tailoring and broader lapels, but extra-wide ties remain niche. For most suits, 7–8 cm is the safest width.

Are microfibre ties good?

Yes for everyday wear: polyester microfibre ties are durable, crease-resistant and affordable. Silk drapes better and ties a neater knot, so choose silk for weddings, interviews and important meetings.

What is a tie clip for?

It holds your tie in place against your shirt. Wear it between the third and fourth buttons, narrower than the tie itself.

What is the best tie knot?

The four-in-hand for most shirts and ties; the half-Windsor for a slightly larger, symmetrical knot with wider collars.

How long should a tie be?

The tip should just reach the top of your belt buckle.
