Men's Wallet Guide: Bifold, Card Holder or Money Clip?

The short answer: if you carry cash and more than six cards, choose a bifold wallet. If you mostly pay by card or phone, a card holder is slimmer and fits a front or jacket pocket. A money clip wallet sits between the two. For leather, Saffiano resists scratches, croc-embossed looks more formal, and smooth leather softens and darkens with use.

Bifold or card holder?
Empty your current wallet and count what you really use. Most men need four to six cards day to day. If you also carry notes or receipts, a bifold keeps them flat. If you do not, a card holder does the same job at a fraction of the thickness: ours weigh 17 g against around 55 g for a bifold, and are slim enough for a shirt or jacket pocket.
A slim wallet is also better for you. A thick wallet in a back pocket tilts your hips when you sit, and it wears out trouser pockets faster.

Do you need RFID protection?
RFID-blocking layers stop contactless cards being read through the wallet. The real-world risk of card skimming is low, but RFID protection also stops two cards clashing at a ticket barrier, which is the more common annoyance. What colour wallet?
- Black is the safest choice and matches black shoes and belts.
- Brown and tan suit brown shoes and look warmer with casual clothes.
- Navy and green are a little different without being loud, and make good gifts.

How to care for a leather wallet
- Empty out old receipts regularly so the wallet keeps its shape.
- Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight, which dry leather out.
- Wipe it with a dry, soft cloth. For smooth leather, a small amount of leather conditioner once or twice a year keeps it supple.
