Why a long umbrella
A long umbrella is the one to carry with a suit or an overcoat. It opens wider than a folding umbrella, there are no folding joints in the shaft, and the crook handle hooks over your arm, the back of a chair or a door handle when you are not using it.
Choose your umbrella
Joseph, £49. A 112 cm canopy on 24 hand-linked, brass-tipped fibreglass ribs, built on a lotus-close frame so the ribs flex and recover in gusts. Auto open, with a hand-crafted wooden crook handle. In six colours: black, blue, green, grey, sand and wine red.
Jonathan, £59. A genuine bamboo J-handle with its own natural grain, so no two are quite alike, on a fibreglass frame with storm-proof brass tips. In black, navy, brown and wine red.
Jaxon, £45. A generous 120 cm domed canopy on an 8-rib fibreglass frame, with auto open and a natural wooden handle. In black, racing green and tartan.
Justin, £49. A 130 cm double canopy that vents through the centre to let strong gusts pass, with auto open and close and a wooden crook handle. In black and grey.
Make it personal
Wooden handles can be engraved with initials or a phone number: useful on an umbrella that gets left on trains, and a thoughtful touch on a gift. Get in touch to arrange it.
Please don't lean on it
A long umbrella looks like a cane, but the frame is built to flex in the wind, not to take your weight. Leaning on it can bend or break the shaft.
Questions
What is a long umbrella?
A full-length umbrella, also called a stick or gentleman's umbrella, with a crook handle you can hook over your arm. It opens wider than a folding umbrella and looks smart with tailoring.
Can I use it as a walking stick?
No. People often call long crook-handled umbrellas walking stick umbrellas, but ours are made to keep you dry, not to take your weight. The fibreglass frame is built to flex in the wind, so leaning on it can bend or break the shaft.
What size canopy do I need?
A wider canopy covers more of you and your bag. Joseph has a 112 cm canopy, Jaxon 120 cm and Justin a 130 cm double canopy.
Are they windproof?
They are built on fibreglass frames, which flex in a gust instead of snapping. Our umbrella buying guide explains what to look for.
How do I look after it?
Open it to dry at room temperature, away from radiators, before you close it, and wipe the handle dry. Store it closed and fastened. More in umbrella care and repair.
