Men's Winter Shoes and Boots: Grip, Rain, Salt and Care

Oct 11, 20264 min read

By Oswin Hyde · Last updated 11 October 2026

The short answer: for a UK winter, choose smooth leather boots or shoes with a rubber sole that grips on wet pavements, and treat them with a water and stain protector before the bad weather starts. A dark brown or black leather Chelsea boot is the most versatile winter shoe; lace-up and brogue boots feel more secure in rain and suit heavier trousers. Save suede for dry days, clean off road salt promptly, and let wet shoes dry naturally, away from radiators.

Leather or suede in winter?

Smooth leather copes much better with rain and salt: it can be protected, wiped clean and polished. Suede is fine on dry, cold days if you treat it with a suede protector, but avoid heavy rain and slush. If you only buy one winter pair, make it leather. Full advice in our guide to suede shoes in winter and rain.

What to look for in winter shoes

  • Grip: a rubber sole with some tread grips better on wet pavements and leaves than a smooth sole.
  • Coverage: boots keep rain and cold off your ankles; a Chelsea boot is the easiest to wear every day.
  • Leather that can be protected: full-grain leather takes a protector spray, cream and polish.
  • Room for warmer socks: check the fit with the socks you will wear. See our size guide.
  • Colour: dark brown and black hide salt marks and dirt better than light tan.

How to protect shoes and boots for winter

  1. Before the first wet day, clean the shoes and apply a water and stain protector. Repeat every few weeks.
  2. Condition smooth leather with cream so it stays supple and does not crack.
  3. Use cedar shoe trees after wearing; they absorb moisture and hold the shape.
  4. Rotate pairs so each has a day to dry out.

How to remove salt stains from leather shoes

Road salt leaves white tide marks that dry out leather. Wipe them off the same day with a cloth dampened in clean water (or a little diluted white vinegar), let the shoes dry naturally, then condition and polish. On suede, let the mark dry and brush it out, then use a suede eraser. More detail in our leather shoe care guide and how to clean Chelsea boots.

How to dry wet shoes

Stuff wet shoes with newspaper or paper towels to draw out moisture, change the paper after a few hours, and leave them at room temperature. Never put leather on a radiator or use a hairdryer: fast heat makes leather shrink and crack. Once dry, condition smooth leather and brush suede.

How our boots are made

Our boots use 100% full-grain crust leather from LWG Silver-rated tanneries, with no surface coating or printed grain, so they can be protected, conditioned and polished. They are lined in genuine lambskin or sheepskin, with padded insoles. Most styles come in UK 7–12, with selected styles in UK 13 and 14, and some in a wide fit. See how our shoes are made.
